WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FULLY HUMAN?
Perhaps it means accepting that we are not simply rational beings navigating a rational world.
We are thinkers and feelers. Builders and dreamers. We experience ambition, fear, love, loss, success, disappointment, intuition, ego, compassion, and hope.
Humans make mistakes. We change, and we begin again. Through all of it, there remains something within us that is deeper than the roles we play, the businesses we build, the possessions we accumulate, or the identities we construct.
I call it the Heart.
Not simply the physical heart, nor sentiment or emotion, but that deeper part of ourselves from which authenticity, compassion, courage, and human connection emerge.
Business. Life. Humanity.
My writing today reflects the whole of that journey. I write about business and entrepreneurship because I have lived them. About hospitality, because restaurants have been part of my life for decades and have given me an extraordinary window into human behaviour. I write about psychology because understanding why we think and behave as we do has fascinated me for much of my adult life. About society, because I believe we should remain willing to question the ideas, institutions, and assumptions that shape our lives, and increasingly, I write about what lies beneath all of these things:
What makes us human?
At a time when technology is advancing faster than our understanding of ourselves, when communication is constant yet genuine connection can feel increasingly rare, perhaps this question matters more than ever.
The future will undoubtedly ask us to become more technologically sophisticated. I believe it will also ask us to become more human. More conscious of how we treat one another. Even more willing to think for ourselves. Courageous in speaking the truth. Capable of compassion without surrendering discernment, and more willing to listen to something modern life frequently teaches us to ignore.
Our own Heart.
BE YOUR HEART.
These three words have become the simplest expression of a philosophy that has taken me a lifetime to understand.
Think with your mind.
Learn from experience.
Question what you are told.
Build. Create. Fail. Succeed. Begin again.
But never lose the human being beneath it all.
Because ultimately, the most important thing we create may not be a business, a career, a book or even a legacy. It may simply be the person we become while creating them.
What does it mean to be fully human?
That is the question I now explore.
Be Your Heart.
